Lighter and much cheaper than the next cheapest trim, the new rear-drive Porsche Taycan 2021 base model seems like the best way to get this electric sports saloon into the hands of more enthusiasts. Before today, the least expensive Porsche Taycan was the 4S model, which starts at $105,250. The new rear-drive Porsche Taycan cuts a full $24,900 off the price, ringing in at $81,150.

The single-motor Porsche Taycan always brings some heat, although not nearly as much as the Porsche Taycan 4S and more powerful Taycans further up the range. Designed with the standard 79-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the base Taycan generates 402 horsepower and 254 LB-FT through its rear-mounted motor.

Upgrade to the 93-kilowatt-hour Performance Battery Plus, a $5,680 option, and the power is turned up to 469 horsepower and 263 LB-FT of torque. Aside from the cost, the additional penalty for the battery and performance upgrade is A hundred and seventy lbs of increased mass. The 0-70 miles per hour time is the same about 5.2 secs for both, but the Plus version is 0.2 secs shorter than the quarter-mile. The standard wheels are 18-inch Aero units, in terms of equipment. Behind them hide 6 piston front and 4 piston back brake calipers. Upgraded brakes and larger wheels are available as options. Porsche adaptive air suspension is optional, but the Active Suspension Management is standard.
Although the base Taycan has a better value overall compared to its 4S sibling, the comparison with the Tesla Model S 2021 Long Range Plus is less positive for the Porsche. We peg the Long Range Plus at 417 horsepower, due to its dual-motor all-wheel drive, and it achieves a range estimated by the EPA of 402 miles. Its 0-50 time is around 3.6 secs, significantly faster than the base Taycan’s. More challenging for Porsche is the fact that the Model S significantly undercuts the price of the basic Taycan; starting at $69,520, a savings of around $11,730 on the Taycan. The Taycan is still a Porsche. And the new basic model brings it within the reach of more enthusiasts.
