The Starting: 996.1 Porsche
The history of the 911 Porsche GT3 begins with this vehicle. It was a particular container of spare parts when it launched in 1999. This car’s brakes were taken from the Porsche 996 Turbo series, and the tires were a Porsche-specific alternative across 911 Porsche. The front seats were replaced by back sports buckets. The Sweet Spot: 997.1 Porsche
If the 996.1 Porsche GT3 911 was all about the engine, the purpose of the GT3 design began to emerge in the 997.1. The engine was the vehicle’s heart, with the 3.5 liter water-cooled flat-6 having a new exhaust and intake similar to the model 996. The official production was 416 horsepower, although Preuninger admits that some engines produced around 430 horsepower.
It differs from the remarkably linear powertrain of 996.1. From 3,000 revolutions per minute, there is a subtle increase. While the Porsche 996.1 engine was spinning to 7,500 revolutions per minute, the Porsche 997.1 engine red-lines 8,500 revolutions per minute. While supernaturally smooth and manageable in the rev range, it needs to be taken to 6,000 revolutions per minute.
The brakes – that was the first 911 GT3 to be offered with Porsche’s PCCB carbon-ceramic trim – react instantly to pedal pressure, dragging the car from the triple-digit speed with insatiable authority.
